Creating a holistic play-learn environment
“I never teach my pupils. I only attempt to provide the conditions in which they can learn.”
Creating a stimulating, inviting, and organised play-learn environment for your child is a wonderful way to help him or her succeed. As the time from birth to six years of age lays the all-important foundation for future learning, emotions and attitudes towards learning, such an environment and the benefits it offers are absolutely crucial.
By creating a holistic environment, we can properly foster our children’s growth in this most significant time in their lives. For the best results, the environment should be created as early as possible.
During sensitive brain development periods, the brain is the most receptive to one’s experiences, regardless of whether they are positive or negative. These periods, as seen on the graph below, present us with opportunities to influence healthy development and being aware of them enables us to help our children reach their full potentials.
There are many different elements to consider when creating a holistic play-learn environment for children. It is vital to make the environment functional, stimulating, cater for different learning styles, to address different senses and interests, and when executed properly, the environment will foster exploration, creativity, active play, and learning.
Why is furniture important?
Having the right furniture is key to the creation of a functional and stimulating play-learn environment.
- Table and chairs should be wooden, and chairs should be light enough for children to move around.
- Shelves should be accessible to children so that they can see and reach all of their acitivites. Only display a few objects – put the other toys away and rotate them every couple of weeks. Utilise open shelving without dividers to make sure that everything is easy to see.
- A bookshelf should display books in a way that allows children to see the covers. This way children can easily choose the book they are interested in.
- Like the shelves, craft storage should be accessible to children so that they can easily get pencils, markers, scissors, glue, paper, and other supplies when they want to express their creativity.
About Mind Candy for Kids
Helping children expand has been the main motivation behind my inspiration of being a teacher. And three months after the birth of my first child, Laura, I realised how crucial the early months and years of children’s lives are, and how important it is for us to take advantage of this transformative time. I immersed myself in literature and other resources, and I carefully observed the development of my own and other children in various environments. It became obvious that early, loving, quality interactions between parent and child have endless, positive benefits that slowly unfold as the child ages.
I developed an awareness of and trust in a child’s incredible potential and unique path, and I began searching for methods and materials. I aim to build rich play-learn environments in which a child can create, explore, and interact his or her way to a successful future.
Mind Candy for Kids is the product of my passion and research, and its mission is to help parents, relatives, and other caregivers make the most of this magical time in their children’s lives.
